Friendship with Your Guides

Part 8: Options

As your guides, we love to open up possibilities for you. Living on the earth plane can be a little like living at the bottom of a well: your view of the world is restricted to a disc of sky above and walls all around. It is our gift to be able to see further and this is a gift we love to share. In the sea of consciousness our light enhances yours. We support you seeing further, sensing a wider range of possibilities and navigating a path that is joyful to you.

At first sight it might feel that being offered more choices is daunting, that life throws enough decisions at you and more could be overwhelming. If so, pause a moment. Let’s consider the nature of choices. You make many thousands every day and for the most part they happen so easily that you scarcely notice that you have made a choice at all. Only a few feel like dilemmas, complexities that you must disentangle, choices that feel life-changing or potentially so. Yet every choice is life-changing, and you can look back in your life and see choices that felt insignificant when you made them, but which you now know led to profound changes of direction. What then makes some choices feel so challenging or burdensome? We suggest that it is the attendant beliefs and ideas that you have around the choice that makes the difference.

Are we suggesting a stance of irresponsibility, that you shrug your shoulders, close your eyes and take a lucky dip attitude to choices? No, what we are suggesting is an attitude of greater responsibility. It works like this: the ideas you have about the outcome of your choices are like the walls of the well. They limit your ability to respond to what is. Your ideas may have much value, but there is a more effective, less stressful, more joyful way of making choices in the sea of consciousness. As you release more and more of your light into the sea of consciousness, more and more possibilities reveal themselves. But you are free to respond to those possibilities in the moment and directly, without thoughts and ideas needing to push their way in between you and your experiencing of the moment.

It is not that ideas and thoughts have no place, but their place comes further on in the process of choice. Their function is to help you establish ways of wisely implementing choices already made. Even here you may find that your thought processes are going through a transmutation, that thoughts can become more beautiful to you as you release from your mind the burden of being the decision-maker. Your mind is naturally playful, creative and inventive. Somewhere along the line it got the idea that it was supposed to take responsibility for your choices. Having taken on that duty, it naturally expected some reward. It decided that if it was doing all the hard work it should be the boss. In fact it is quite keen for you to consider that it is you: ‘I think, therefore I am’, as the philosopher said.

This is a time for letting your mind out of its harness and off its rather uncomfortable throne. It may complain, for when when you offer an improvement, unfamiliarity may outweigh the appeal of a change, even one for the better. Therefore be patient with your own mind. When you travel into the sea of consciousness and your guide opens up more of its beauty for you, your mind may not know how to tell you about your own experience. It wishes to, and it has the potential to be very good at finding ways of translating the language of light into a language that is more familiar. Help your mind by reminding yourself of its talent for play and for imagination. Play at inventing new ways of perceiving the subtle energies of the sea of consciousness. Notice what lies at the edge of your perception. Your guide will help you.

You are granting yourself freedom to experience a more direct connection with the Source of All. Of course, that connection is both indissoluble and eternal. But the presence of your mind as a kind of meditator between you and the Source has tended to dampen down its immediacy. There are valid reasons for this. You have been exploring separation and your mind has been like a photographer sending you pictures from abroad. It has allowed you to form impressions of what you have felt separate from, so you have not lost touch altogether. With those impressions at the back of your mind you have felt free to investigate a physical reality, a world of slowed down energies, that teaches you a great deal about how beings take energy and give it shape.

In the sea of consciousness your guide is helping you, at the rate that is most comfortable for you, to a more direct experiencing of your connection with Source. That direct connection, in which you are acknowledging your own divine self, helps you create pathways in the sea of consciousness that then translate into lived experiences that are joyful and uplifting for you.

Crucial to this shift is trust, above all trust in the being that is you. You are learning that you are worthy of your own trust. Your mind may like to remind you of all the mistakes it holds you to have made, but those mistakes (if indeed they are mistakes at all) exist in the past. Each time you enter the sea of consciousness you are in the eternal now or a timeless state. Time does not really exist in the sea of consciousness; it is a product of it, the consequence of certain options that arise from your engagement  with consciousness. In the now you are perfect, for imperfection depends on comparison between you now and you in another time, real or imagined. Everything is present in the sea of consciousness; there is no other time.

To trust yourself is not usually accomplished in a single leap, nor does it need to be. One reason that your guide tends not to deliver cut and dried answers is to encourage your growth in trusting yourself. You like to give yourself feedback as you develop trust, and this is wise. Like someone crossing a chasm on an uncertain bridge, you like to test your footing. But trust builds trust. We encourage you to notice the many wise decisions you make every day, and to pay less attention to what you think of as your failures. Wise decisions are not necessarily big decisions. Any decision that adds joy to your life is a wise decision.

The path of joy is not a narrow mountain path with precipices on either side. On the contrary, at any one moment there may be many joyful choices before you. In the sea of consciousness you create many pathways simultaneously. As a being you are generous to yourself and to the Universe. You love to help. Translating that gift and skill into your human life and the choices life presents you with each day is another skill, one that you already have more abundantly than you may give yourself credit for, and you are developing that skill all the time. You may like to help your guide to help you by saying inwardly, “Thank you for helping me welcome more joy into my life”.
