SCHEDAR: Vitality, Wholeness, Precision

Schedar is the brightest star in the constellation of Cassiopeia, an orange giant about 230 light years away. The star has about five times the mass of the Sun, but is cooler. It’s believed that Schedar takes approximately 102 days to rotate once, in contrast to about 25 days for the Sun. It appears to have three companion stars, but these are thought not to be true companions, but stars further off in the same line of sight.

Finding Schedar

In the northern hemisphere it is one of the easiest stars to find, for Cassiopeia being close to the Pole Star is visible all or almost all the year and has a very easily recognised W- or M-shape. Schedar marks the point of the second V, if you are seeing it as a W.

Schedar: Mythology

Finding SchedarSchedar derives from the Arabic Al Sadr, the breast. So in this series of Heaven on Earth Starlight Essences there are two stars with the same derivation, Sadr, the breast of Cygnus and Schedar, the breast of Cassiopeia.  Cassiopeia, Queen of Egypt and wife of King Cepheus, ended up in the sky as punishment for her vanity. Combing her hair one day she decided she was more beautiful than the sea nymphs, and said so. They were not pleased and went to husband of one of them, Poseidon, god of the sea, and asked him to punish her. The god sent a sea monster, Cetus, and a flood to her land, so King Cepheus begged for a lesser penalty. He was told to chain his daughter Andromeda to a rock to take her chances with the sea monster, but Perseus came and rescued her, and fell in love and they lived happily ever after. However Cassiopeia continues to be punished as sometimes she hangs upside down in her chair in the sky.

The Quileute people of Vancouver Island saw Cassiopeia as the holes in an elk’s hide where it was stretched to dry. The elk had been a trickster who killed four brothers, but was killed in turn by a fifth brother who saw through its tricks. The Navajo have a creation story in which Black God takes crystals from his pouch and places them in the sky, first one, the Pole Star, then seven, the Revolving Male (the Plough or Big Dipper), then five, the Revolving Female (Cassiopeia).

Lying as it does on the Milky Way, which the Norse saw as the World Tree, Cassiopeia was seen as Ratatosk the squirrel (literally Gnaw-Tooth) nibbling at its branches. While in Celtic tradition Cassiopeia was seen as Llys Don, home of the queen of the fairies and mother of Gwydion, a magician who was said to be the inventor of writing and builder of the rainbow, and whose home was Caer Gwydion, the Milky Way.

Schedar: Spiritual Qualities

Key Qualities: Vitality, Wholeness, Precision

Schedar helps us to open to receiving more life force energy. This can be experienced as a dual function, an inflow from outside and a tendency to free up energy within that has become caught. So a function of its light is to reveal to us places where energy is behaving in ways we might consider no longer productive, though from another viewpoint we could consider this energy as stored, an equivalent to a battery. There can be a sense of these repositories of energy being highlighted by the star, and thereby being drawn into service in a new way. In this age that new way will always have an element of unification, a bringing together of what has previously been scattered or even opposed. In this process of unifying there can be successive revelations of how the scattering occurred in the first place. The light of Schedar can take us on a journey from highlighted details through finding a new commonality to a release of stored energy and then to a fuller realisation of our divine essence. Behind all this we may detect the principle of praise; in praising we sing the world into oneness.
